Driveways, Patios and Sidewalks

Driveways, patios, sidewalks and other concrete (other than building foundations) located on private property do not require permits or inspections. City sidewalks and approaches do require permits and inspections since they are located within the right-of-way of the street.

To get a permit, you must complete a permit application and submit a drawing that shows dimensions, rebar size, and rebar spacing. Typically, this type of work must be done by a bonded concrete contractor.

Please contact building department at 432-523-4820 if you have any questions.

When installing sidewalks, drives and other concrete on private property, we recommend that the depth of the concrete be at least 3 1/2 inches. You should always use steel reinforcement in the concrete. Either use 3/8 inch rebar spaced at 18 inches on center or 6 X 6 wire mesh. Expansion joints should be included at least every 25 feet for walks and drives.
