Code Compliance

The goal of the Code Compliance Division is to promote a healthy and safe environment and to safeguard the life, health, and welfare of the public by educating, inspecting and enforcing various codes and ordinances.

 

This encompasses many areas including substandard structures, junked and abandoned vehicles, RVs, high weeds and brush, property maintenance, public right-of-ways, signs, peddlers as well as soil contamination from chemicals such as motor oil, antifreeze and sewage.

Junked Vehicles

Applies to vehicles that are on private property that have expired tags or inspection stickers and have not moved in 30 days. Process begins with a notice of violation.

 

Weeds and Rubbish

Covers vegetation on private property and adjacent public property/right-of-ways that has grown to a height of 12 inches.  In addition, junk or debris that has not been properly disposed of or stored in a safe manner is also covered in this ordinance. Process begins with a notice of violation.

 

Substandard Structures

Covers structures that have become open and accessible, and vacant properties that have deteriorated to the point of unsafe habitation.

Each year vacant structures are inspected to ensure their safety. Property owners are contacted to either makes necessary repairs or demolish the structure. Failure to comply will result in the demolition of structures that have been declared hazardous. Since the inception of this program in 2001, 105 structures have been demolished, 10 have been moved off the property and 71 owners have made the necessary repairs.

 

Property Maintenance

Provides guidelines as they relate to safety issues, structural preservation and neighborhood enhancement guidelines found in the International Property Maintenance Code 2003).

 

Public Right-of-Ways

Covers those items that encroach upon public right-of-ways creating safety hazards (travel trailers, landscaping, basketballs goals, boats, drums, containers, etc.)

 

Peddlers

The issuance of peddlers' permits allows the City to perform a background check on individuals wishing to sell goods within the city limits on a temporary basis.

 

Signs

Applies to new and old signs; erected, constructed or maintained so there are no obstructions to any fire escapes or means of egress, or obstruction to view traffic or hinder fire apparatus from entering and performing duties and to help maintain the visual integrity of our community.
