- -----Weeds, Brush and other Vegetation;
- Allow fire to spread quickly
to adjacent properties and can
hide many safety hazards such as downed electrical lines, old septic
tanks, ditches and holes. Also skunks, cats, rats, mice, snakes, wasps,
bees, mosquitoes, roaches, flies, ticks, etc. find these areas to be a
good place of food supply and often dwell there.
- ---Trash and Limbs;
- Many times trash will harbor
many various types of rodents and insects, especially after rainfalls.
Tires, paper goods, plastics and objects lying flat against the ground
hold moisture. This provides an excellent dwelling place for insects
such as mosquitoes, roaches, scorpions, etc., a food supply source and
breeding ground. Skunks and other rodents also find that trash and limbs
are a good refuge and a place of habitation.

- --- Abandoned Houses, Mobile Homes and Commercial Buildings;
- A large number of children and
transients get hurt or killed every day in abandoned structures. Many
times fires occur from smoking, drug use, trying to keep warm and
vandalism in these structures. Electrical fires, electrocutions and
asphyxiation are a few other dangers that present themselves in these
type of places. Also, these types of structures become a refuge for
cats, dogs, skunks, rats, and mice.

- Abandoned Motor Vehicles;
- Found on any public
right-of-way, they seem to attract vandals. Also many children and
teenagers have been known to have been seriously injured while playing
in or on such vehicles. This uses valuable Police and EMS time and
dollars. There is also the problem of cats, dogs, skunks, snakes, rats,
mice and insects taking refuge in abandoned vehicles. These vehicles are also a nuisance to
traffic and detract from neighborhood appearances as weeds and trash
tend to grow up and collect underneath them.
- Soil Contaminations;
- Chemicals such as antifreeze,
motor oil, paints, battery acid, sewage and gray waters (from washing
machines, sinks, etc.) can reach our drinking water by filtering down
into the water table, or by leaching into water lines. These
contaminations also ruin the soil and its purposes. Many chemicals may
be found dangerous to the air we breathe, the water we drink and our
soil. Chemicals may or may not show immediate or obvious signs of
danger, many times it’s only after the damage has been done that the
problems are found.

- We hope that this answers your questions and explains the importance of
maintaining your property. As you can see, it’s not only about keeping
the property looking good, but also maintaining control of animals,
rodents, reptiles and insects which carry many types of diseases and
produce unsanitary matter (dung). ALL of these are an issue when it
comes to the health, safety and welfare of the people here in our
community.
